Reasons for doing this
Not to quelch the flame of adventure, but a fellow /tg/ member did point out
"Living in an extremely limited amount of space, without any way of getting a girlfriend or even just a regular female friend, with public showers/bathrooms? Yeah, I wouldn't even do that with some of my best bros, much less a bunch of internet dudes. What's the benefit to doing this? Do you guys really want to give up quality of life just to be near some fa/tg/uys?"
He's got a point, but here's your chance to list good reasons for doing this.
My reason:
-Not only is this a perfect social experiment as well as a perfect chance to lead an alternate lifestyle.
-/tg/ guys getting together and gaming shit up.
-a well knit community that can do a variety of skills and still be bound together by a single idea.
-Protections from nuclear fuck ups.
If you need inspiration for this kind of project, check out Denmark's Christania.

Re: Reasons for doing this
Keep in mind it also doesn't have to be a permanent residence either. Entirely possible it will be for some, but others can come and go. In addition, there would be plenty of space aboveground for housing, the purchase doesn't just include the underground complex.
A lot of people in the /tg/ thread aren't thinking in three dimensions. Square footage is relative.

Re: Reasons for doing this
Honestly, a couple thousand bucks or so for a permanent residence is very cheap, especially in such a locale as a hardened nuclear silo. Basic apartments out by me are in the 1k+/month range, even for single occupant spaces.

It's a night club, gaming center and hotel combined. Sure it's not exactly Nerd Vegas but hey, it's cheaper to invest in.
Then again with the above-ground installations it could become Nerd Vegas...

Re: Reasons for doing this
Like I suggested in the thread, our reason can quite easily be: "Because we can".
Even if it all fails, even if people die in a horrible asbestos collapse, even if it devolves into a horrible Lord of the Flies style murderfest, then at least it'll be one hell of a story.

I believe we have found our mantra, good sirs.
Either that or 'Just as planned.'

"Yes we can!"
Sorry, couldn't resist.
At any rate, people have certainly thrown away a lot more effort and money for a lot less.

We do what we must
because we can.
For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who are dead.

The chance to have a kick-ass project to work on with some bros, invest in what could potentially evolve into Nerd Vegas, and get myself a place to live in a friggin' missile silo. I see few if any downsides.

For some reason, my replies in this topic keep not showing up. I'll try once more:

Apologies, Anon. I thought you were a /b/ that snuck in and decided to start trolling.

I don't mean to imply that this project is going to fail. I think it has a good chance. I just think that it would be appropriate if it had the same slogan as Dwarf Fortress, considering the similarities.

Stop discussing, go watch captnduck's DF2010 tutorials on YouTube, play until all of your dorfs are dead.
Then you can come back.

Re: Reasons for doing this
I was planning on doing something similar to this, but doing it alone. I'd like to get out of the city and enjoy more of nature in my remaining years. I was just poking around in /tg/ when i found this by chance. I honestly thought that this was just some sort of joke that was aimed at /x/'s failure to pull it off despite the planning, but to my surprise, you guys seem like you really want to do this.
I'm willing to put in what i can, funds & goods, once i notice that this is starting to take on a real form. Until then, i'll hang around and help refine any ideas that are put on the board. That way, i can at least contribute something in case me joining you is no longer an option.

I hope this isn't a joke. But if this is an epic trolling, I totally fell for it, and I'd give the troll a solid 10/10.

Re: Reasons for doing this
I'm doing this because I can.
Because normal people don't live in abandoned missile silos. And I'm not a normal person.
And even if the whole thing falls through, I'm sure I'll get something out of it.

This. The reason any of us are into /tg/-related stuff in the first place is because everyone here is an imaginative individual, a person for whom the cut and dry everyday life most people settle for is boring, so we engage in fantasy because that's what we find interesting. This is a group of people that can appreciate things simply because they are FUCKING AWESOME.
And this project is a chance to bring some of that awesomeness we have long obsessed over to the real world. As an imaginative individual you can admit defeat and just accept the reality that is given to you, or you can live your life the way you want to and help build a fucking underground nerd fortress out of a defunct missile base. So, to reiterate what others have said, I want to do it because it's fucking awesome and because I actually believe that we can.
