Just something i ran across a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was neat. lol

No word yet on pricing, buuuut i think this would solve the personal space issue i've seen in a few other topics.

This is pretty cool. Above ground dwellings would certainly increase space for gaming stuff. So long as the walkways are covered, so I won't have to get wet when it rains.

Re: An idea for above ground dwellings
I support this.
I absolutely love the minimalist style of it. In addition, what we would pay up front (assuming it's more expensive than western-style apartments) we would save tenfold with the lack of furniture, furniture upkeep and simplicity of cleaning.
That and it looks damn cool. People like damn cool.

I was kind of hoping the surface structures would be all neo-gothic architecture, but looking like an iPod is cool too.

Other cheap unique forms of housing are shipping container houses, metal buildings and (my favorite) dome homes. A series of domes would fit the theme IMHO. I wonder if concrete pipe is cheap.

Nike site also has some existing above-ground structures we can use.

While we're on the subject, there's another kind of metal box usable for construction that might come in handy for us.

I fully support this project and welcome our new Japanese box-welding overlords.
My only concern with that thing is sleeping during the day, with that many windows it gets difficult to make things dark.
Keep in mind the number of all nighters likely to be pulled in a place like this.

I'm sure eventually we'll end up building a full-blown Imperial cathedral, complete with huge security guards in Spess Mehreen armor posted by the doors. One thing at a time, though.

Re: An idea for above ground dwellings
This what I propose : a "clean" version of Megaton.
Get the giant metal cargo crates as base building structure, then add whatever material we can salvage from breakers' yards and dumps... There was once a discovery channel show where people built a house for a ridiculous price out of such recycled materials. I could ver well imagine the walls made out of the side of different buses, and using several hydraulic glass doors side by side for a main entrance...
And while we're on the topic of military material, you know that armies around the world dump warships every now and then and pay for them to be destroyed (And they pay of course because their ship contain asbestos and other shit). And the guys at this link seems to be looking for such a service in the US...
By the way, hydroponics have been proposed, but why not directly a greenhouse (even though most basement dwellers won't get the intrest of having flora caged in a giant structure of metal ang glass)

If we do hydroponics, I can see us doing it underground, in shelf like fields...

Subterranean hydroponics require a shit ton more electrical power then greenhouse hydroponics.
While much cooler, it would save us hundreds, if not thousands to go with the greenhouse instead.

Re: An idea for above ground dwellings
as long as we are producing our own energy, then in the long term the underground will do much better for us. There are probably a few grants associated with it, and I know there are grants associated with using alternative energy.

Re: An idea for above ground dwellings
Guy in australia here. There was a news article about how a fair amount of people are making livable housing out of cargo containers. As in they put proper work into them, weld up the doors and make their own, more manageable doors, windows, insulation, etc. Seems like it could work well for us.

I support the idea of metal containers houseing, cheap but with more space.

Re: An idea for above ground dwellings
Exactly the point. You need minimum paving (if any, depends on weather you want them to be permanent or not, but its more than possible to be permanent), its very easy to do them up to make them more than livable with running water, electricity, and with only a few adjustments you can make them look like something other than cargo containers. Ontop of that, you can stack them, bam, you've saved space, and if needed you can easily just move the container.

Re: An idea for above ground dwellings
In one of the links you can find a guy that works out of the UK making Cargo Container houses up to 10 levels or such.
UPDATE
Well, after finding a bit of free time on a proper computer, I found a few things out. First, it is generally necessary to have the containers either on raised pylons or a slab to prevent the moisture from the ground from getting to the metal.
Also, Agson Engineers has a module system set up for Mineing and Military bases, which would actually help serve as a fairly decent system for the duration of the clean-up/repair effort and a little beyond, if not for a while.
